iPhone 17 Pro camera settings, and what each one actually does

Set Pro Default to HEIF Max under Settings, Camera, Formats if you edit on the phone, ProRAW Max if you edit anywhere else, and leave Photo Mode at 24MP. The iPhone 17 Pro is the first iPhone with 48MP sensors behind all three rear lenses, with a real 100 mm telephoto and a 200 mm crop out of it.

Where the iPhone 17 Pro stands in September 2026

Worth saying plainly before you set anything up: Apple discontinued the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max on 9 September 2026, when the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max were announced. You cannot buy one new from Apple any more. Millions of people own one, it runs iOS 27 in full, and it remains one of the two best camera phones Apple has ever shipped.

What you have is an A19 Pro, a 6.3 inch or 6.9 inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion up to 120Hz, and the first iPhone camera system where all three rear modules use 48MP Fusion sensors. The gap to the iPhone 18 Pro is narrower than a year of marketing suggests: the 18 Pro's telephoto, ultra wide and front camera all carry over unchanged, and the real difference is the variable aperture main camera and the software Apple has fenced off to it.

Formats: the setting that decides everything else

Settings, Camera, Formats is where the iPhone 17 Pro stops behaving like a phone. Four things live there.

High Efficiency or Most Compatible. High Efficiency writes HEIF and keeps files at roughly half the size. Most Compatible writes JPEG. Unless something in your workflow genuinely cannot open HEIF in 2026, leave it on High Efficiency.

ProRAW and Resolution Control. Turning this on adds a format toggle to the top of the viewfinder. It is off by default.

Pro Default. Once Resolution Control is on, you choose what that toggle switches to: HEIF Max, which is a 48MP processed file, or ProRAW Max, which is a 48MP linear DNG carrying Apple's computational processing in a form you can undo. A ProRAW Max file runs to roughly 75MB. A 24MP HEIF is closer to 3MB.

Photo Mode. 12MP, 24MP or 48MP as the standing default. 24MP is the sensible answer: it is a merge of a 12MP binned read and a 48MP read, so it carries more detail than 12MP without the file size of 48MP.

The honest guidance is that ProRAW Max is a liability if you are not going to edit. It is slower to shoot, slower to browse, and an unedited ProRAW looks flatter than the HEIF your phone would have given you for free.

The four framings, and what each one costs you

The iPhone 17 Pro gives you four camera buttons and two of them are crops. Knowing which is which decides when you can trust the zoom.

8xCrop from the telephoto sensor200 mmf/2.812MP3D sensor-shift with autofocus

Apple's summary is 8x optical-quality zoom in, 2x optical zoom out, a 16x optical-quality zoom range, and digital zoom to 40x. Read "optical-quality" as "a crop from a 48MP sensor", because that is what it is. At 8x you are using a 12MP window on the telephoto sensor at f/2.8, which is excellent outdoors at midday and grainy in a theatre.

The lens that changes how you shoot is the 100 mm. It is long enough to isolate a subject across a street, it renders faces with no perspective distortion at all, and because it has its own autofocus it can focus close enough for tight detail shots.

One setting people leave wrong: under Preserve Settings, Creative Controls covers your Photographic Style, aspect ratio and filter. Without it on, the camera forgets your style every time you close it.

Video: Apple Log 2, ProRes RAW and genlock

The iPhone 17 Pro added three things for video that no earlier iPhone had. Apple Log 2 is a revised log profile with a wider gamut and more highlight headroom than the original Apple Log, which means more room in a grade and more work if you never grade. ProRes RAW records up to 4K 120 fps on the main camera, while the ultra wide and telephoto top out at 60 fps. Genlock synchronises frame timing across multiple devices, through Final Cut Camera 2.0 and compatible external hardware.

The plain-language version: if you deliver to Instagram, record 4K 30 in Dolby Vision HDR and ignore every one of the above. Log footage that is never graded looks worse than the standard profile, not better, and ProRes RAW fills storage at a rate that will surprise you.

If you do grade, record externally where you can. ProRes and ProRes RAW to an external SSD over USB-C removes the storage problem entirely and is the single biggest practical upgrade to the workflow.

Camera Control, and what iOS 27 withholds

Camera Control is the flush capacitive button on the lower right edge. A press opens the Camera app, a second press takes the photo, a press and hold records video for as long as you hold it. A light press brings up a slider you swipe along, and a double light press cycles which slider you are on: Exposure, Depth, Zoom, Cameras, Styles and Tone.

Configure it under Settings, Camera, Camera Control. You can set it to require two light presses before it wakes, which stops it firing in a pocket, and you can change its clean press to open a third-party camera app instead of Apple's.

Now the part that matters in September 2026. iOS 27 added a Pro controls panel with manual lens aperture, shutter speed, white balance and a live histogram, plus Photographic Styles 3 with texture and grain, plus Apple Reference Image. All three are iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max only. An iPhone 17 Pro on iOS 27 does not get them and will not, because the aperture control depends on the 18 Pro's variable aperture main camera and Apple has scoped the rest with it.

What an iPhone 17 Pro does get from iOS 27: the editable controls panel on every mode, Siri mode in the Camera app, and all the Photos app editing tools including the rebuilt Clean Up.

Questions people ask

What iPhone 17 Pro camera settings should I change first?

Turn on ProRAW and Resolution Control under Settings, Camera, Formats, set Pro Default to HEIF Max, leave Photo Mode at 24MP, and switch on Preserve Settings for Camera Mode and Creative Controls so the app stops resetting.

Should I shoot ProRAW on the iPhone 17 Pro?

Only if you will edit the files. A 48MP ProRAW Max frame is around 75MB and looks flatter straight out of the camera than the HEIF the phone would have made. If you are posting the same day, HEIF Max is the better choice.

Is the iPhone 17 Pro 8x zoom optical?

It is a 12MP crop from the 48MP telephoto sensor at 200 mm, f/2.8, which Apple calls optical-quality rather than optical. It holds up well in daylight and degrades quickly indoors, where the 4x at 100 mm is the safer choice.

Can I still buy an iPhone 17 Pro in 2026?

Not new from Apple. Both the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max were discontinued on 9 September 2026 when the iPhone 18 Pro was announced. They are widely available refurbished and second hand, and they run iOS 27 fully.

Does iOS 27 give the iPhone 17 Pro manual shutter speed?

No. The Pro controls panel with aperture, shutter speed, white balance and histogram is limited to iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max. Third-party camera apps have offered manual shutter and ISO on the iPhone 17 Pro since launch.
