iPhone 17 camera tips that change what your photos look like

Change three things first on an iPhone 17. Turn on Resolution Control in Settings, Camera, Formats so you can shoot 48MP deliberately. Use the 2x button for faces, because it is a 12MP crop at 52 mm from the main sensor rather than a separate lens. And use the front camera sideways, since the 18MP sensor is square.

What is actually new on the iPhone 17

The iPhone 17 shipped in September 2025 and is still the model Apple sells as the standard iPhone. Three camera changes matter, and one of them is not a camera at all.

The ultra wide went from 12MP to a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide at 13 mm, f/2.2, with a 120 degree field of view. That is the largest single jump, because the old 12MP ultra wide was the weakest lens on every iPhone that had it and it fell apart indoors. The front camera went from 12MP to an 18MP Center Stage camera at f/1.9 with autofocus, on a square sensor. And the display gained ProMotion with an adaptive refresh rate up to 120Hz, which changes nothing about image quality but makes the viewfinder track movement well enough that you can actually time a shot.

The main camera is the same 48MP Fusion sensor as before: 26 mm, f/1.6, sensor-shift optical image stabilisation, 100 per cent Focus Pixels. The A19 chip drives Deep Fusion, Smart HDR 5 and the latest generation of Photographic Styles.

The settings worth changing on day one

Apple's defaults are tuned for people who never open Settings. If you are reading this, you are not that person. Everything below lives in Settings, Camera.

SettingWhereChange it toWhy
Resolution ControlFormatsOnPuts a 12, 24 and 48MP selector in the viewfinder. The default capture is 24MP
GridCompositionOnThirds lines plus a horizon level indicator when you point the phone down
Mirror Front CameraCompositionOnSaves the selfie as you saw it in the viewfinder rather than flipped
View Outside the FrameCompositionOffThe translucent border outside the crop makes framing harder, not easier
Preserve SettingsPreserve SettingsCamera Mode, Exposure Adjustment, Photographic Style onStops the app resetting to Photo mode at 1x every time you close it
Prioritise Faster ShootingMain listOff if you shoot stills, on if you shoot childrenOff gives more processing per frame, on gives more frames
Lens CorrectionMain listOnCorrects ultra wide and front camera distortion at the edges

Two more are worth a thought rather than a default. Formats, High Efficiency keeps files small in HEIF, while Most Compatible forces JPEG and roughly doubles the size. And under Formats you will find Photographic Styles, which is where you set a style that applies to every frame you take.

Which lens to use, and why 2x is not a lens

The iPhone 17 has two rear lenses and three buttons. The 2x button is a 12MP crop taken from the middle of the 48MP main sensor, which is why Apple describes it as an optical-quality 2x Telephoto at 52 mm, f/1.6, rather than as a telephoto camera. It has no glass of its own. That is not a criticism: a crop from a 48MP sensor at 12MP output is genuinely detailed in good light, and it inherits the main camera's sensor-shift stabilisation.

ButtonCameraFocal lengthApertureUse it for
0.5x48MP Fusion Ultra Wide13 mmf/2.2Rooms, landscapes, group shots against a wall. Never faces up close
1x48MP Fusion Main26 mmf/1.6Everything by default. The only lens with sensor-shift stabilisation
2x12MP crop from the main sensor52 mmf/1.6Portraits, food, anything where you want the background compressed

Full zoom range is 2x optical zoom in and 2x optical zoom out, which Apple calls a 4x optical zoom range, with digital zoom up to 10x. Past 2x you are cropping pixels, so walk closer instead. The 48MP mode also enables 48MP macro photography through the ultra wide.

The practical rule for faces: 13 mm stretches noses and widens jaws at arm's length, 26 mm is neutral at about a metre and a half, and 52 mm is the one that looks like a photograph somebody took of you rather than a photograph you took of yourself.

The square 18MP front camera, and the reason to turn the phone

Every iPhone 17 model, including iPhone Air, carries an 18MP Center Stage front camera at f/1.9 with autofocus, and Apple built it on a square sensor. The practical consequence is that the selfie camera performs the same whether you hold the phone upright or on its side, because it is cropping a landscape or portrait frame out of a square rather than rotating a rectangle.

That means you can hold the phone vertically, the way your arm actually wants to, and still get a horizontal group shot out of it. Center Stage widens the frame and re-centres automatically as more people lean in.

The autofocus is the underrated half. Older front cameras had a fixed focus distance tuned for arm's length, which is why selfies taken on a tripod two metres away were soft. The 18MP camera focuses, so front-camera shots from a stand or a shelf are now usable.

One honest limit: the front camera is still f/1.9 on a small sensor with no optical stabilisation, so in a dark bar it will still be the worst camera on the phone. Turn around and use the main camera with a mirror if the light is bad.

Photographic Styles instead of filters

Photographic Styles on iPhone 16 and later, the iPhone 17 included, are not filters. They act inside the image pipeline before the file is written, they preview live in the viewfinder, and, unlike the four fixed styles on iPhone 13 through 15, they can be changed or removed entirely after capture in the Photos app.

Five of them are tuned for skin undertones rather than for a mood: Cool Rose, Neutral, Amber, Rose Gold and Gold. Pick the one that renders your own skin without going grey or orange, then leave it alone. Control is a pad rather than a slider: vertical for tone, horizontal for colour, and an intensity slider beneath.

Set your choice as the default under Settings, Camera, Photographic Styles, and it applies to every photo you take until you change it. That single habit does more for a consistent-looking camera roll than any editing app, because it means you are not correcting the same cast a hundred times.

If you want a camera that renders a film or digicam look live on photo and video instead, that is what we are building. ShutterAI is our own app, so discount this accordingly: it is coming to iPhone this fall, free to start, and there is a waitlist.

What iOS 27 adds to an iPhone 17, and what it does not

iOS 27 arrived on 14 September 2026 and runs on iPhone 11 and later, so an iPhone 17 gets all of it. Two Camera changes are worth finding.

The controls panel is now editable. Open the carousel of controls above the shutter, tap Edit, and add or remove controls per mode, so Photo, Video and Portrait can each carry a different set. This works on every iPhone running iOS 27.

Siri mode is a new mode in the Camera app that runs Visual Intelligence on whatever is in the frame: identifying plants and animals, translating text, pulling an event off a flyer into Calendar. It needs Apple Intelligence hardware, which means iPhone 15 Pro and later, every iPhone 16 and 17, and iPhone Air.

What an iPhone 17 does not get: the Pro controls panel with manual aperture, shutter speed, white balance and a live histogram, Photographic Styles 3 with its texture and grain controls, and Apple Reference Image. All three are limited to iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. No software update brings them down the range, because two of the three depend on the variable aperture hardware.

Questions people ask

Which iPhone 17 camera tips make the biggest difference?

Turning on Resolution Control so you can shoot 48MP deliberately, setting a Photographic Style that suits your skin undertone, and using the 2x button for faces instead of the 1x. Those three change more frames than anything else.

Is the iPhone 17 2x a real telephoto lens?

No. It is a 12MP crop from the middle of the 48MP main sensor, which Apple describes as an optical-quality 2x Telephoto at 52 mm, f/1.6. There is no separate glass. It is genuinely sharp in good light and noticeably worse in a dark room.

Should I shoot everything at 48MP on the iPhone 17?

No. The 24MP default is the better everyday file, because 48MP HEIF is several times larger and the extra resolution only shows when you crop hard or print. Turn Resolution Control on and switch to 48MP for landscapes and architecture.

Does the iPhone 17 have Photographic Styles 3?

No. Photographic Styles 3, which adds texture and grain controls, is limited to iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on iOS 27. The iPhone 17 has the latest-generation Photographic Styles introduced with iPhone 16, which are still editable after capture.

Can the iPhone 17 record with the front and back cameras at once?

Yes. Dual Capture arrived with iOS 26 and works on iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air. Open Video, tap the controls icon, choose Dual Capture. It records at 1080p or 4K at 24 or 30 fps.
