How to pick the photos
A vacation camera roll is a thousand photos of buildings and about nine of people. Picking is mostly putting the people back in.
- Order by the trip, not by the day. Arrive, wander, eat, swim, leave. It is the same shape as the holiday itself and it is why chronological order almost always beats best-first here.
- Alternate wide and close. A street, then a face, then a plate, then a view. Four landscapes in a row is a screensaver.
- Cut the landmarks to one. Everyone has seen the cathedral. Keep your best frame of it and spend the other slides on what only your trip had.
- Include one photo you are actually in. The dump is about the trip, but people follow you. Ask someone on day one rather than hunting for a decent selfie on day six.
- Keep one bad photo. The 5am airport queue, the wrong meal, the rain. One honest slide makes the other nine believable.
- Watch the midday light. Photos shot at 1pm have hard shadows across faces, so lean on the morning and evening frames instead.
