The countdown and midnight
For the blurry, loud, flash-heavy photos taken between 11:50 and about ten past twelve.
Last night, first morning
The strongest new year dumps hold both ends of the night. These captions do the same.
Resolutions, honestly
Low-key and believable. These work under a dump that is more calm than celebration.
Looking back at the year
For the 31 December recap dump that pulls one photo from each month.
How to pick the photos
New year is the one occasion where the dump needs a photo from each end of the night. A carousel of ten midnight photos all looks like the same flash in the same dark room. Add the getting-ready photo at the start and something from the first morning at the end, and suddenly the set has a beginning and a finish.
- One firework photo. Everybody's fireworks look the same and none of them look as good as they did in person. Keep your best and cut the rest.
- Keep the blurry midnight one. Motion blur at 00:00 is more convincing than a sharp posed photo taken at half eleven.
- Faces over drinks. Ten glasses raised is a stock photo. The hug is the picture.
- End quiet. Cold morning light, an empty street, someone asleep on the sofa. The contrast is what makes people swipe to the end.
For a year recap, pick one photo per month and resist re-picking your most-liked posts. The unposted ones make a better carousel.
Questions people ask
What should I caption a new year photo dump?
Name the moment in a few lowercase words: "we made it to twelve", "went out at ten, home at five", "day one, slightly delicate". Avoid full sentences about growth and gratitude.
What is a good caption for a year in review dump?
Keep it flat and let the photos do the work: "twelve months in one post", "a year, condensed", "the year in the order it happened".
When is the best time to post a new year dump?
Either late on 31 December for a year recap, or 1 to 2 January for the night itself. Posting at midnight buries it under everyone else's countdown.
How do I caption a resolutions post without sounding fake?
Make the resolution small and specific. "one goal, written down" or "this year i answer the phone" reads as real; "new year new me" does not.
How many photos should a new year dump have?
Nine to twelve, with at least two from before midnight and one from the next morning so the set is not all flash in the dark.
