What Super 8 does to an image
- 18 frames per second. Standard home-movie speed, noticeably steppier than the 24 or 30 we are used to.

- Exposure flicker. Small variations between frames make the brightness pulse gently.

Take a Super 8 clip, freeze one frame and compare it to a graded phone photo and they are not far apart. Play it and the difference is obvious. Everything that identifies the format lives in time: the step of 18fps, the drift of the gate, the pulse of the exposure, the grain reshuffling every frame.
This is why a "Super 8 filter" that only tints your video looks like a warm video, not a home movie. When you are testing an app, ignore the still preview and watch ten seconds of motion.
How to shoot it
- Shoot outdoors in daylight. Super 8 stock was slow; low light was never its habitat, and emulations inherit that.
- Move the camera. Pans, walking shots and handheld drift all emphasise the gate weave.
- Keep clips short. Five to ten seconds is period-accurate and edits better.
- Shoot people doing something, not posing. Home movies are about motion: twirling, running, blowing out candles.
- Plan for music. The silent-film association is part of why it feels nostalgic.
