How to do it, step by step
- Look up the sunset time and work back an hour Golden hour starts about sixty minutes before sunset and about sixty minutes after sunrise. Set a reminder for ninety minutes before, because you want to be standing in the right place, not walking to it.
- Pick a spot with an open horizon in the right direction The sun sets in the west, roughly, and swings north or south with the season. A west-facing beach, park or bridge keeps direct light on your subject to the end. A street canyon loses the sun forty minutes early.

When golden hour actually is, and how long it lasts
Golden hour is not a fixed sixty minutes. It is the stretch when the sun sits between the horizon and roughly six degrees of elevation, and how long that takes depends on your latitude and the month. Near the equator the sun drops almost vertically and the window can be over in thirty-five minutes. In northern Europe in December it runs past ninety.
Work backwards from sunset, not forwards from a time you memorised last summer: sunset moves two to three minutes a day, close to an hour a month.

Why the light is different, in one paragraph
Two things change at once. First, colour: at a low angle, sunlight travels through several times more atmosphere than at noon, and the atmosphere scatters short blue wavelengths out of the beam. What reaches you is what is left, which is warm, somewhere around 3500 to 4500 kelvin against midday's 5500 K. Second, and more important for faces: direction. Midday sun is a hard source directly overhead, so it drops shadow into the eye sockets and under the nose, and it makes people squint. Golden hour arrives from the side or nearly head-on at eye level, so it fills the sockets instead of hollowing them, and the ratio between the lit and shadow side of a face is far gentler, because the whole sky and every pale surface nearby bounce light back in.
That is also why golden hour on an overcast day is a non-event: thick cloud removes the direction and leaves only a slight warm cast. Thin high cloud is ideal, softening the sun without hiding it.
Put the sun behind them, not in their eyes
The reflex is to point the subject at the sun so their face is bright. It is the wrong move: they squint, their skin goes shiny and orange, and the shadow under the nose is hard. Turn them around instead.
Backlighting puts a bright rim on hair and shoulders that separates the subject from the background, it lets them open their eyes properly, and it lights the face with soft bounced light rather than a hard beam.
The cost is that your camera now sees a very bright background and, left alone, will darken the entire frame until your subject is a silhouette. That is the single reason most golden hour photos fail. The fix is two taps:
- Tap the face on screen. The phone re-meters for skin and the frame brightens sharply.
- Drag the sun icon down a little. About a third of a stop. Faces look better a touch under-exposed than clipped, and it leaves room to lift shadows later.
- Let the background go. A blown sky behind a well exposed face reads as deliberate. A dark face under a correct sky reads as a mistake, and without flash you cannot have both.
- Find a bounce. A pale wall, wet pavement, sand, a jacket over your arm. A sunlit white wall two metres away is the cheapest fill light there is.
Flare is a matter of position. Sun hidden behind the head gives a clean rim; sun past the ear gives a halo and low contrast; sun in open frame gives heavy veiling flare, doubled by any fingerprint on the lens.
Exposure and lens choices that hold up
A few habits matter more than settings.
- Use the main 1x lens. The ultra-wide distorts faces up close and flares badly with the sun near the frame. For a tighter portrait, step back and use 2x.
- Lock focus and exposure. Press and hold on the face until AE/AF Lock appears. Without it, exposure jumps every time the sun slips in or out of frame.
- Leave HDR on, but expect a fight. Smart HDR tries to rescue the sky and can flatten the image. Dragging exposure down slightly tells it to stop.
- Consider ProRAW for the extreme frames. Shooting into the sun is where a raw file earns its 75 MB: the warm cast and clipped highlights are far more recoverable.
- Shoot more than feels sensible. Expression and light are both moving, and neither comes back.
Blue hour, the part almost everyone misses
Most people pack up when the sun touches the horizon. The next twenty minutes are better for portraits than anything that came before. With the sun between zero and six degrees below the horizon, there is no direct beam at all: the entire sky becomes one enormous diffuse source, contrast collapses, and skin renders evenly with no hot spots and no hard shadow anywhere.
Two things to manage. Colour goes cool fast, often 9000 K and up, which renders skin grey if you leave white balance alone: either lean into it or warm it back a few hundred kelvin in editing. And the shutter slows past the point where handheld is reliable, so brace against a wall or a railing and let Night mode work.
Blue hour is also when practical lights start to pull their weight: a shop window, festoon bulbs, someone's phone torch just out of frame. Warm points against a deep blue sky is one of the most reliable combinations there is.
Planning it so you actually turn up
The failure mode is not technique, it is logistics. Golden hour happens whether or not you are outside for it, and it moves by an hour a month.
- Know the direction, not just the time. Sunset moves along the horizon through the year, so the spot that worked in June may be behind a building in October.
- Check the cloud, not the temperature. Thin high cloud is best, thick low cloud is a write-off.
- Arrive early. Fifteen minutes to find the angle still leaves forty-five minutes of light.
