How to take good flash photos

Set flash to On rather than Auto, get within two metres, put something one to two metres behind your subject so the background is not black, tap the face and raise exposure by about a third of a stop. Phone flash falls off with the square of distance, so distance is the whole game.

How to do it, step by step

  1. Decide whether this is actually a flash situation Flash works within about three metres. Across a concert hall, through a window, or on a landscape it does nothing except light the dust in front of the lens. If your subject is further than three metres away, turn it off and raise exposure instead.
  2. Set flash to On, not Auto Auto fires when the phone thinks it is dark, which is not the same as when flash helps. Tap the flash icon and choose On, and in bright backlight use it deliberately as fill so the face is not a silhouette.
  3. Get within two metres and place the background Light falls off with the square of distance, so a subject at one metre gets four times the light of one at two metres. Then check what is behind them: a wall or a group of people one to two metres back stops the background dropping to black.
  4. Tap the face and nudge exposure up Tapping meters for skin. Then drag the exposure slider up by about a third to two thirds of a stop, more for deeper skin tones, because auto exposure protects highlights and tends to leave faces darker than they should be.

What phone flash actually does to a face

A phone flash is a small LED a centimetre from the lens. That geometry produces a specific and mostly unflattering result.

  • No modelling. Light on the lens axis throws its shadows directly behind the subject, where the camera cannot see them. Shadows are what give a face shape, so without them a face looks flat and wide.
  • Brutal falloff. Illumination follows the inverse square law, so moving from one metre to two drops the light to a quarter, two full stops. That is why a table has a bright person at the front and a near-black one behind.
  • Specular hot spots. A tiny source reflects off skin oil as a small, very bright highlight, so foreheads, noses and chins go shiny.
  • A colour mismatch. The LED is roughly 5500 K while the room is 2700 K, so anything the flash reaches is neutral and anything past its range stays orange, in the same frame.
  • Red eye. A source that close to the lens axis reflects straight back off the retina.

None of that makes flash bad; the disposable camera aesthetic is built entirely on those flaws. It means flash is a look you choose, not a default you leave on.

Flash, exposure and skin tones

Direct flash historically rendered darker skin poorly, and the reason is worth knowing because a version of it survives in automatic exposure today. Colour negative film was balanced through the middle of the twentieth century using reference prints, the Shirley cards, that showed a pale-skinned model. Emulsions and lab printing were tuned around that reference, so deeper skin tones landed near the bottom of the film's usable range and printed as a dark mass with no detail. Kodak improved the dye layers in the 1980s, largely because furniture and chocolate manufacturers complained that dark browns rendered badly.

The modern version is not chemistry, it is metering. Automatic exposure protects highlights, because clipped highlights cannot be recovered. In a flash photo the brightest things are specular hot spots on skin, so the camera pulls the whole exposure down to save them and the face lands darker than it should. That penalises deeper skin tones most, because they had less headroom to begin with.

The compensation is simple and manual:

  • Tap the face, then raise exposure. A third of a stop to start, two thirds or more for deeper tones. Judge the face, not the histogram.
  • Reduce shine before you shoot. Blot with a tissue. Specular highlights are what drag the exposure down.
  • Get closer rather than brighter. Halving the distance is worth two stops, and it makes the source relatively larger and softer.
  • Avoid a bright background. A lit window or white wall behind a face makes the meter pull down again.
  • Do not fix it later with a brightness slider. Lifting an under-exposed face raises the shadow noise with it and greys out the tone.

When flash helps, and when it just makes things worse

Flash is a two to three metre tool. Inside that range it is often the best light available; outside it, it does nothing.

  • Use it in daylight against backlight. Fill flash on a face in front of a bright sky is the most underused technique on a phone: the sky stays exposed and the face stays lit.
  • Use it for the party look. Hard flash, dark background and close subjects is the disposable aesthetic on purpose.
  • Use it to freeze movement. The flash duration is very short, so a subject that would blur at a slow shutter speed comes out sharp.
  • Do not use it through glass. Windows, aquariums, picture frames. You photograph the flash.
  • Do not use it at a concert. Row twenty is thirty metres out, so the flash lights the head in front of you and nothing else.

Night mode and flash are alternatives, not partners. Night mode holds the shutter open for one to three seconds and stacks frames, keeping ambience and colour but blurring anyone who moves. Flash gives a sharp subject and a dark background. Choose by whether the subject or the room is the point.

The technique that fixes most flash photos

Five adjustments, in order of how much they help.

  • Close the distance. One to two metres. Everything else is secondary.
  • Give the background something to be. A wall, a bar, other people, anything a metre or two behind the subject. Black backgrounds are only good when you chose them.
  • Get the light off the lens axis. A phone cannot bounce its flash, but a friend's torch held up and about forty-five degrees to one side restores the shadows that give a face shape. This is the biggest single jump in quality available.
  • Diffuse it. One layer of tissue over the LED costs about a stop and removes most of the hot spots.
  • Watch the eyes. Looking slightly off-axis cuts red eye, and tilting glasses down a few degrees sends the reflection past the camera.

Rescuing a flash photo afterwards

Flash photos have a characteristic edit. Highlights down first, since the hot spots are the problem, then shadows up a little to bring the background back from black without making it noisy. Then the colour: the flash lit the subject at about 5500 K while the room stayed at 2700 K, so a global white balance move fixes one and breaks the other. Correct for the face and let the room stay warm.

Shine on skin is a lighting problem, not a texture problem, so smoothing tools are the wrong answer: they take the pores out with the highlight and leave a plastic patch.
